The Get Rid Of Slimy girlS club is based on similar clubs Watterson formed when he was a kid. Calvin is the Dictator-for-Life for the club and has appointed Hobbes as his First Tiger. His mission is to harass neighbourhood girls like Susie, Very often Calvin and Hobbes would hold "meetings" in their tree-house to discuss matters such as why girls are so disgusting and plans to get Susie soaked with a water balloon.

Calvin's Alter Ego

Spaceman Spiff is Calvin's Space-Explorer-Extraordinaire alter ego. Spaceman Spiff can be traced back to a comic strip Watterson drew for a high school German class, called Raumfahrer Rolf. It was a two-page comic in which the protagonist got eaten by a monster at the end, but it was written in some sort of German, and that was what counted. The character was reworked calling him "Spaceman Mort", but the strip was conceived as a fairly elaborate, continuing project and that didn’t seem like the best use of his academic time, so it was never published. A year or so after college, the newly christened Spaceman Spiff was Watterson's first strip submission to newspaper syndicates. Spiff was a diminutive loudmouth, not unlike Calvin, albeit with a Chaplin mustache, flying goggles, and a cigar. He had a dimwitted assistant named Fargle, and they roamed through space in a dirigible. The syndicates rejected it. Years later, Calvin and Hobbes were created, Watterson finally had the opportunity to bring Spiff back.

Although the Spiff strips are limited in narrative potential, but Watterson feels that they’re so much fun to draw. The planets and monsters offer great visual possibilities, especially in the Sunday strips. Most of the alien landscapes come from the canyons and deserts of South Utah, a place more weird and spectacular than anything.

Stupendous Man is Calvin's superhero alter ego. He fights the tyranny of such villains as mostly in multi-strips.
Babysitter-Girl and the Evil-Bedtime-Lady. He appears

Whenever Calvin has to deal with problems or situations of which he thinks he can't handle it, he calls the help from Stupendous Man. Stupendous Man is capable of solving the problems Calvin can't. Calvin denies the fact that he is actually Stupendous Man himself. If somebody wants to hold Calvin responsible for the things that Stupendous man did, Calvin always claims that he didn't do anything wrong. In this way, Calvin thinks he can solve certain problems without dealing with the troubles it may cause (and it certainly will)."

Tracer Bullet is Calvin's private eye alter-ego. Often than not, he attempts to solve the mystery of the broken vase and the case of the geometry problem. Tracer Bullet seldom appears in Calvin and Hobbes

"Tracer Bullet stories are extremely time-consuming to write, so I don't attempt them often. I'm not at all familiar with film noir or detective novels, so these are just spoofs on the clichés of the genre. Cartoonists don't use black much anymore (the eye, being lazy, is attracted to empty white space, especially when the panels are so small), and we miss some dramatic possibilities that way."

Great Imagination!

"Calvin's transmogrifier sums up the spirit of the strip. A cardboard box becomes a series of great inventions with a little imagination. The transmogrifier shows the kind of kid Calvin is, and it added a new dimension to the strip's world. This was an important story for Calvin and Hobbes, and I've used the transmogrifier several times."

The dinosaurs in Calvin and Hobbes have become one of Watterson's favourite additions to the strip. Dinosaurs have appeared in many strips before Calvin and Hobbes, but Watterson feels that he has treated them with a little more respect than they’ve often received at the hands of cartoonists.

"The biggest reward for me however, has been the fun I’ve had exploring a new interest. I enjoy dinosaurs more now than I did as a kid, and much of the job of being a cartoonist lies in keeping alive a sense of curiosity and wonder. Sometimes the best way to generate new ideas is to go out and learn something", says Watterson

The Wheels!

Calvin’s wagon is a simple device to add some physical comedy to the strip, and it is most often used when Calvin gets longwinded or philosophical. It often leads a silly counterpoint to the text and sometimes the wagon ride even acts as a metaphor for Calvin’s topic of discussion.

Calvin rides the wagon through the woods, bouncing off rocks and flying over ravines. Calvin’s woods is important to the strip, because it’s the placewhere Calvin and Hobbes can get away from everyone and be themselves. The solitude of the woods brings out Calvin’s small, but redeeming, contemplative side

Calvin's killer bike is probably the thing Calvin fears most. It's always ready to run Calvin over, or, when Calvin is taught cycling by Dad, trying to throw him off. Calvin knows that riding the bike can be very handy to go to other places very easy, but he has yet to deal with his fear. He still thinks the bike is his worst enemy and takes every chance to let the air out of the tires, or tie his bike to a tree with all the ropes he can find.

Rosalyn

Rosalyn is Calvin's babysitter, the only person who Calvin truly fears. She is described by Watterson as someone "who even seems to daunt Calvin's parents, using their desparation to get out of the house to demand advances and raises". Most of her visits to Calvin's house have been wrought with anguish. Calvin has locked her out of the house and threatened to flush her homework down the drain, literally.

Rosalyn make very little appearances in Calvin & Hobbes, and so it's quite difficult to characterize her. We do know that she has a boyfriend named "Charlie", who Calvin on one occasion advises, "Rosalyn would make a bad mother! She hates kids!"

Calvin @ School

Calvin hates going to school. It is a place where he has to face Susie and not to mention the school bully, Moe. He often gets into trouble with his teacher-cum-space-monster-alien Miss Wormwood and landing up in the principal's office is rather common for poor Calvin

Susie Derkins is the perfect, "A" student kid who lives next door. She is a girl who Watterson describes as "earnest, serious and smart". She serves as an excellent foil for Calvin's personality - and Hobbes', as well. Susie and Calvin have a love-hate relationship which is based on mostly intense dislike. Calvin rarely does anything worse than kidnapping Mr. Bun or pelting Susie with snowballs while contemplating the effect of his actions on Christmas morning. Susie is by no means a sitting duck either, as she's often the one who has the last laugh in most of Calvin's schemes

Moe is the everyday jerk you know. He's big, dumb, ugly, and cruel. Moe is the school bully in Calvin's Elementary School and very often Calvin is the victim of his exploits. Due to his relative bigger size, Calvin only way to retort him are sarcastic comments which often lands him up face-down on the floor.

Miss Wormwood is named after the apprentice devil in C. S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters.
We see hints that she's waiting to retire, that she smokes too much, and that she takes a lot of medication. She seriously believes in the value of education, so needless to say, she's an unhappy person.

Dad & Mom

Calvin's parents are nameless.

His Dad is apparently a satirical portrayal of Bill Watterson's own father. (In fact, Calvin's dad is a patent attorney, like Watterson's father). Watterson explains that most of Calvin's camping trips which involve "character building" are relatively unaltered versions of the trips his own dad used to take him on, while Watterson was a kid.

Calvin's Dad is extremely amusing, from his explanation of natural events (which often become more complicated than the real explanation) to his reaction to Calvin's "escapades". He is fairly level-headed, sometimes sarcastic: often with a strange twist of humor. He probably enjoys Calvin a lot, though he did claim that what he really wanted was a dog!

Calvin's Mom is hardworking and is always there when Calvin is in real trouble, like when Calvin accidentally rolls the car into a ditch, or when Hobbes is really lost, or when Calvin is sick. She's about as perfect a mom as you could expect- especially with a son like Calvin.

Of course, Calvin's Mom is exasperated by Calvin at times, too. Parenting Calvin is a tough job, its amazing that she's still sane. Watterson's own comments on Calvin's mom:

"The daily disciplinarian, a job which taxes her sanity... so I don't think we get to see her at her best. I regret that the strip mostly shows her impatient side, but I try to hint at other aspects of her personality and her interests by what she's doing when Calvin barges in."

Bill Watterson's 'Calvin & Hobbes' comic, about a six-year-old boy and his lively stuffed tiger, got published as a daily newspaper strip in the mid-1980s and became an instant success. Within a year, the syndicate for which Watterson worked presented him with licensing possibilities, which he stubbornly rejected. "My strip is about private realities, the magic of imagination, and the specialness of certain friendships. Who would believe in the innocence of a little kid and his tiger if they cashed in on their popularity to sell overpriced knickknacks that nobody needs?"

After a long fight, the licensing-rights were eventually returned to Watterson, which means that every Calvin & Hobbes T-shirt, coffee mug or other gadget that is on the market is illegal (and therefore probably even more coveted). Watterson also fought the syndicate on the matter of the strict regulations for the Sunday strip, which were loosened, and on sabbaticals, which has made it easier for cartoonists to take a time-out from their work when they get tired. After ten years of doing the strip, Watterson decided to quit.

'Calvin & Hobbes' was inspired by comics like 'Peanuts' (by Charles Schulz) and 'Pogo' (by Walt Kelly), and has become one of the all-time classics, having captured the hearts of millions of readers all over the globe. Calvin

Named after 16th-century theologian John Calvin (founder of Calvinism and a strong believer in predestination), Calvin is an impulsive, imaginative, energetic, curious, intelligent, and often selfish six-year-old. Despite his low grades, Calvin has a wide vocabulary range that rivals that of an adult as well as an emerging philisophical mind. Watterson has described Calvin thus:

"Calvin is pretty easy to do because he is outgoing and rambunctious and there's not much of a filter between his brain and his mouth."

"I guess he's a little too intelligent for his age. The thing that I really enjoy about him is that he has no sense of restraint, he doesn't have the experience yet to know the things that you shouldn't do."

"The socialization that we all go through to become adults teaches you not to say certain things because you later suffer the consequences. Calvin doesn't know that rule of thumb yet."

Calvinistic predestination as a philosophical position basically entails the idea that human action plays no part in affecting a person's ultimate salvation or damnation. Calvin's consistent gripe is that the troublesome acts he commits are outside of his control: he is simply a product of his environment, a victim of circumstances.

Calvin commonly wears his distinctive striped shirt. His last name is never mentioned in the strips.

Hobbes

Hobbes is Calvin's tiger who, from Calvin's perspective, is as alive and real as anyone else in the strip. He is named after 17th-century philosopher Thomas Hobbes, who had what Watterson described as "a dim view of human nature." He is famous for his claim that humans' natural state is a state of war, where "the life of man [is], solitary, poore [sic], nasty, brutish, and short." Hobbes is much more rational and aware of consequences than Calvin, but seldom interferes with Calvin's troublemaking beyond a few oblique warnings-after all, Calvin will be the one to get in trouble for it, not Hobbes.

For the most part, Calvin and Hobbes converse and play together, reveling in what is ultimately a deep friendship. They also frequently argue or even fight with each other, though their disagreements are generally short-lived. Often Hobbes ambushes Calvin with an energetic pounce-and-tackle attack, which leaves Calvin bruised and scraped up but not seriously harmed. Hobbes takes great pleasure in his demonstrations of feline prowess, while Calvin expresses keen frustration at his inability to stop the attacks or explain his injuries to his skeptical parents.

Watterson based some of Hobbes's characteristics, especially his playfulness and attack instinct, on his own pet cat, Sprite. Hobbes takes great pride in being a feline and frequently makes wry or even disparaging comments about human nature, declaring his good fortune to lead a tiger's life. In Calvin's philosphical ramblings, it is evident that Hobbes is usually Bill Watterson's voice on the subject, whereas Calvin usually seems to echo the sentiments (or lack thereof) of modern America

Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip written and illustrated by Bill Watterson, following the humorous antics of Calvin, an imaginative six-year-old boy, and Hobbes, his energetic and sardonic-albeit stuffed-tiger. Syndicated from November 18, 1985 until December 31, 1995, at its height Calvin and Hobbes was carried by over 2,400 newspapers worldwide. To date, more than 30 million copies of 17 Calvin and Hobbes books have been printed.

The strip is vaguely set in the contemporary mid-western United States, in the outskirts of suburbia (West, 1989). Calvin and Hobbes themselves appear in most of the strips, though several have focused instead upon Calvin's family. The broad themes of the strip deal with Calvin's flights of fantasy, his friendship with Hobbes, his misadventures, his views on a diverse range of political and cultural issues and his relationships and interactions with his parents, classmates, educators, and other members of society. The dual nature of Hobbes is also a recurring motif; Calvin sees him as alive, while other characters see him as a stuffed animal.

Calvin and Hobbes was first conceived when Watterson, having worked in an advertising job he detested, began devoting his spare time to cartooning, his true love. He explored various strip ideas but all were rejected by the syndicates to which he sent them. However, he did receive a positive response on one strip, which featured a side character (the main character's little brother) who had a stuffed tiger. Told that these characters were the strongest, Watterson began a new strip centered on them. The syndicate (United Features Syndicate) which gave him this advice actually rejected the new strip, and Watterson endured a few more rejections before Universal Press Syndicate decided to take it.

The first strip was published on November 18, 1985 and the series quickly became a hit. Within a year of syndication, the strip was published in roughly 250 newspapers. By April 1, 1987, only sixteen months after the strip began, Watterson and his work were featured in an article by the Los Angeles Times, one of the nation's major newspapers. Calvin and Hobbes have twice earned Watterson the Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year award from the National Cartoonists Society, in 1986 and 1988. Before long, the strip was in wide circulation outside the United States;

Watterson took two extended breaks from writing new strips-from May 1991 to February 1992, and from April through December of 1994.

In 1995 Watterson sent a letter via his syndicate to all editors whose newspapers carried his strip. It contained the following:

"I will be stopping Calvin and Hobbes at the end of the year. This was not a recent or an easy decision, and I leave with some sadness. My interests have shifted however, and I believe I've done what I can do within the constraints of daily deadlines and small panels. I am eager to work at a more thoughtful pace, with fewer artistic compromises. I have not yet decided on future projects, but my relationship with Universal Press Syndicate will continue.

That so many newspapers would carry Calvin and Hobbes is an honor I'll long be proud of, and I've greatly appreciated your support and indulgence over the last decade. Drawing this comic strip has been a privilege and a pleasure, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity."

The last strip ran on Sunday, December 31, 1995. It depicted Calvin and Hobbes outside in freshly-fallen snow, reveling in the wonder and excitement of the winter scene. "It's a magical world, Hobbes ol' buddy!" Calvin exclaims in the last panel. "Let's go exploring!"
